I realize by the time most of the 07 seniors have read this, I will have had to coax them in to doing so (except: frostedcookie and jay-bo). But I feel that this pathetic Blog in its pathetic existence needs a revival. Hopefully I can get Josh in on this blog, because we all know this is his kind of thing. Here are a few subjects I would like to put forth, 1: Should the prohibition of alchohol be reenstated upon the U.S. 2: As a minor is it our moral responsibility to pay attention to the specifics of politics? Or need we only be informed of major events? And last but not least 3: Who is taking over the world? The Muslims, the Chinese, or the Chinese-Muslims? Is this an issue we should be afraid of? (note: I didn't say "concerned") Have at it!

So I thought you guys might like alittle summary of my thoughts about Westmont and Biola...
WESTMONT-
Myth #1- "the place is gorgeous" Yes/No. Monteceto is very up scale and the shops by the beach are very expensive. The drive into Westmont goes through a neighborhood lined with huge gates and tall hedges, which inclose gigantic mansions. the campus, however, has been restricted by building codes- alot of the buildings are pretty old and not very attractive.
Secret #2- the $75 million is going toward some new buildlings and remodel, which should be done in 4 years (by the time you're a senior there)
Myth #3- "the people there are snobby and rude." Yes/No. everyone i encountered was gracious and friendly. not all of them come from affluent backgrounds.
Pro- prof/student relations are very strong and because it is a small and only undergrads, the atmosphere seemed more intament.
Con- there campus didn't seem to be very "study friendly"
Con- there isn't anything in walking distance, but there is a good shuttle system
Pro- if you're getting over a 4.0, are a well rounded person, and applied early action, there is a strong chance you'll get a full ride Monroe Scholarship! can't argue with that!

So, for my 18th birthday my parents got me and my brother tickets to the Bob dylan concert in Portland. It's actually the first concert I've been to, and it was definately great. Bob was backed by a 4 piece band . He played keyboards the whole time, which was a little dissapointing, especially since his guitar was sitting center stage the whole time. He did 16 songs, 4 off his new album and the rest from his extensive catalouge. I knew almost all of them, but the P.A. system at Memorial Colesium made it hard to hear. The concert on a whole was very blusey, and by the end it was definately rockin and everyone was on their feet. There were a few songs I wish he would have done tonight, but I guess thats just another reason to see him play again sometime.

National Champs!

I know none of you watched this, but the Oregon State Beavers have just won the College World Series "back home in Omaha." This accomplishment for the Beavers will be truly monumental as it is their first national championship since womens cross country in 1961!The winning pitcher was Newberg's own Dallas Buck (below right) , who led NHS to the state title in 2003, and this year was drafted in the 3rd round of the draft to the Arizona Diamondbacks.Other Newberg connections include Derek Englekee and Pat Casey, who left GFU to coach at OSU.The beaver's pitching staff was dominant, led through gutsy performances by Jonah Nickerson (pitching on 2 days rest), and Kevin Gunderson, and even though he worked 5 innings just the day before, he finished up the game, recording the save, which gave him the most saves in the nation with 20. "We're going to live it up," Gunderson said, "until we can't live it up no more."

Weeping and nashing of teeth! Just when it seemed like everything was going to settle down, fallen man reared his ugly head. Movies:
Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties

The first movie wasn't a classic, but was enjoyable and entertaining. With this one parodying a Dickens classic, I expect this one to possibly beat the first one. Out: June 16

X-men 3: The Last Stand

I loved the first 2 installments. With this one adding the likes of Beast, Angel, Shadowcat, ang Juggernaut (although subtracting the lovable Nightcrawler), I expect to be pleased and to get pumped for more action movies later in the season. Out: May 26

Music:

Less Than Jake - In With The Out Crowd

One of the most influential bands of the 90's rock scene - and one of the most forgotten, uncredited, and overlooked by the general public. Gone are the days of 3rd wave ska music about having a good time from releases like "Pezcore" and "Losing Streak". Going are the catchy horn lines (only 6 songs with them this time, with 2 horn lines completely unnecessary). But in its replacement is a set of 12 VERY solid pop-punk songs mostly about reminiscing about your life and reflecting on what the world is like these days, continuing the theme of their 2003 album "Anthem". These guys deserve the check-out. Key Tracks: "In-dependence Day", "The Rest of My Life", "P.S. Shock the World". Out: May 23

Angels and Airwaves - We Don't Need to Whisper

While blink-182 is on hiatus, guitarist Tom Delonge put together a new band to continue with music he thought didn't suit blink's style. This music is very inpirational, a really uplifting experience for times when you are down. If you like U2, the Cure, or Coldplay, you'll like this too. Check out "Valkyrie Missile", "The Adventure", and "The War". Out: May 23

AFI - Decemberunderground

While the only song I've heard from this album is "Miss Murder", I can tell at least I will likely be pleased by this release. This album will more than likely have a very dark tone, but that's what their trademark is, isn't it? Out: June 6th.

Wow, what a season!!! I was at near heartbreak when rumor had it that this would be the last season- not so. What a set up for season 6- just when you thought Jack would restore his relationship with his daughter, the chinses ninjas capture him! How will he get out of this one? This season had many a plot twist, action, tragedies, and victories all in 24 hours. Unfortuantely, many of you have missed out on the best Fox show ever, but don't worry because there is still another season to jump into! With such a season as that, i think it leaves us with alot of questions and comments to offer.

If you have any thoughts about the current play production (i.e. casting thoughts, acting ideas you've got, etc.), this is the place to post them (hey, SOMEBODY had to post this).
Myself, I think the casting was well done. Personally, I like both my roles, those of Borachio and Friar Francis. I am excited that I get to play a slimeball (Borachio) this time around, as I have mostly played "father figures" in the past (Baptista, Brandon...waitaminute, she likes casting me with names beginning with "B"). And I like the idea of playing Francis as well, because this gives me a an opportunity to play polar opposites in the same play. But I'm done rambling. Let's hear your comments!

Greatest Rock Songs of All Time

This is a topic I thought would be interesting for people to sound off on, and although I understand it to be mostly subjective, I think there are some definite criteria you can look at. For this post, I'm just considering Classic Rock, pretty much the late 60's thru the 70's (for example, I don't consider U2 to be classic, because most of their stuff has come in the 80's and 90's). I also looked for songs that can be seen as groundbreaking or defining. I'm posting my top 5, in alphabetical order, let the arguing begin.

American Pie, Don McLean 1971

This is the song with the chorus everyone knows, but seemingly not many have listened to it all the way through. This stroy song of epic length (over 7 minutes) is packed with symbolism that garners several different interpretations. Most common and practical is the view that McLean wrote this song as a tribute to early rock & roll pioneer Buddy Holly, who was killed in a plane crash. The song is also a history lesson and commentary on Rock and McLean's life up to that point. It touches on Dylan, the Beatles, the Stones, and refers to social events of the time. This, plus its sing-along-ability and superb songwriting make it an obvious choice for this list.

Baba O'Riley, The Who 1971

Another great song out of '71 is one of my personal favorites (obviously). Coming off the Who's classic album Who's Next, it showcases the band's pineering use of the synthesizer coupled with Pete's power chords and an unforgettable piano riff. This convey's to the listener the realization of the "teenage wasteland" the artist finds himself in, but with flare only the Who can provide.

A Day in the Life, The Beatles 1967

Have you heard of these guys? Hard to pick one song of their's, but this can truly be seen as epic. They masterfully syntesize two different songs here, and provide a great background of experimental studio music. The separate parts one by Lennon and the other by McCartney show the stereotypical difference between the two writers. While John begins musingly and dark, Paul comes in with a whimsical verse, which slips back into the original tone of the song. It all comes crashing together in one magnificent chord followed by some weird studio editing stuff. Some will think the Beatles music isn't as good as the people they influenced, but in the case of this song, the Beatles are the masters.

Dream On, Aerosmith 1973

Of all the songs on this list, this is the one I have listened to the least, but I still consider it a very solid choice. Containing incredible riffs, solos, and vocal performance, this ground-breaking power balled is the epitomy of a rock song that leaves the listener wanting nothing but to hear it again. What's really impressive is that thhis song appears on their debut album.

Hotel California, The Eagles 1976

Like all of these songs, this is the complete package of awesome music and great songwriting. The Hotel California is a commentary on the temptations and dangers the Eagles see in the wild lifestyle rock offers. This insightful lyric is backed by incredible guitar solos, which leads to the issue of which version is better, the album or live take. Protesting the Pink

This new blog color (that of the pink) doesn't really agree with me. I kind of liked the black a lot better. So, I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat as me and wanting the old color scheme back (or at least a different color). Theological Head Cracking with Billy "the Believer"

This post is dedicated to Erin...(heartwarming sigh)... with whom i have enjoyed many theological conversations squeezed in between classes debated through theology class. Here's to you... and Jesus!

There was a boy named Billy. He grew up in a loving home in the Newberg valley. His best friend Kristian, living just across the street, played with him every day. The two were inseperable. When Billy was ten, Kristian told him about a man who saved his life from certain death. Overjoyed that his friend was alive, Billy asked more about this man and how he had been saved. Kristian explained to Billy that this man, Jesus, sacrificed his life, even though he had done nothing wrong, so that he could go free from the entanglement of all the bad things he had done. Billy knew that he had done some terrible things, some things that his parents didn't even know about. He wished so much for someone to do the same to him so he could be free from it all like Kristian. To his joy, Kristian told him that he also could be saved from death. That afternoon, Billy confessed his sins to the Lord and believed that Jesus died and rose again. He believed whole heartedly, was baptized, and walked with God.
Five years later, when the boys started highschool, the two went their own way. Billy fell under the pressures of his friends to reject what he had believed and become his own god. He took on the practices of witch craft, Buddism, Hindu, and Islam. That year Billy's name was in the obituary. Many wondered where he would go, to die in his sin, or to escape death and live in Paradise?

The question arises: Where will Billy "the Believer" be in eternity? He was a steadfast believer at ten, but at fifteen and up until his death, he rejected God. This may involve your view of predestination, free will, and eternal security. I don't want your opinion, I'm sorry, but it's useless- I want Biblical interpretations. You must back up all your beliefs with Scripture. Seek to answer: what does the Bible say on this matter?

When one thinks of evangelism and the world of needs for the Gospel, what are your opinions/biblical beliefs on where, let's say Americans, should evangelize? With the corruptness of our own community, should we stay with in "ourself" and evangelize? Should we leave it to the natives because they are more effective (no walls of language and culture to cross)? Or should we let the Koreans pick up the torch (which they already have) that we've dropped and just send our money, since we are recognized as the richest country on earth? What are your convictions on the duty we have as Christains to further the Gospel?

Winter Olympics: A Rave

Yeah Baby! Turin is awesome, and I'm not just talkin about that peice of cloth they've got there, I'm talkin Olympics. This is best embodied by everybody's favorite Olympian, the FLYING TOMATO. That would be Shaun White, the American snowboarder who took gold in th men's halfpipe. And the best thing about him isn't his sweet shredding skills! Its that the dude is just stoked to be at the Olympics! His youthful enthuaism is what has made this year great. Heck, even the ice skating was great. Did you see that American pair skate that one routine? Okay, maybe that doesn't ring a bell. But what about that guy that bombed his short program and came right back and nailed his next run! The Olympics aren't about winning, its about comeback stories like that. And how can you not love hearing Bob Costas. Did you love the Olympics as much as I did?

Ugh! I'm ready to go look at that stupid cloth, its got to be better than this year's Olympics. Exibit A: Bode "I like to drink alot of" Miller (Lite). This guy was the posterboy for the Olympics. A skier on the cover of Time, and Newsweek? He must be the real deal. But NO! I guess he would rather get wasted at a bar the night before than focus on sking. Sure dude, its only the OLYMPIC GAMES! I have to say, I saw this coming. Bode couldn't decide if he wanted to cool and just ski, or play to the bad-boy persona the press expounded on. Result of a conflicted interest: no medals. He has one run left on Saturday, but its combined, so he can't get the personal Olympic glory/redemption he needs (And we all know he won't win anyway). And don't get me started on ice skating. No Michelle Kwan, and men wearin fake eyelashes! And what about NBC's coverage that in 4 hrs. gives you 10 mins. of good stuff? And those opening ceremonies? Absolutly absurd! Did you hate the Olympics as much as I did?

Right now I am going through my material of songs I have written and am shooting to recording them this summer. While going through them I realized something shocking: A LOT OF THEM DON'T HAVE LYRICS!!! OH! OH! OH! AHHHHHHHHH! (phew). Anyway, I am working on lyrics to my songs at the present, and I have some great ideas. But I fear that there might be some subjects I might not have covered in this, so this is where you come in. Please submit suggestions you have for lyrical focuses. Don't be afraid to submit them, even if the topic's, well you know(...), just because they are submitted doesn't mean I will be obliged to use them. Be creative! I shall assume that you all have, like me, been recieving pamphlets and letters and shiny brochures and things from various colleges. I've found that I for one tend to automatically discount a school if it's not Christian, which isn't necessarily a good plan of action.

President's Day

Unless you've been living under a rock, then you'd know that tomorrow is President's Day and that we have no school. Oh joy. Anyway, in honor of this great holiday, let's share some random fact about a former (or current) president. Even though I am widely accepted as the random fact king, I don't want to be the only "commenter" on this. But I'll start: George Washington is NOT the first president of the US of A. He is actually like the 8th or 9th. He is just considered the first President under the Constitution. The name of out REAL first president is John Jay (wow, we have people in our class by those names. Odd). Now your turns. Check back frequently!

P.S. This is ongoing, this isn't just for 2-19-2006. You're free to post as long after President's Day as you'd like. And try to keep facts appropriate (sorry Thomas Jefferson/Grover Cleveland enthusiasts).

Listen for these phrases, and others, in class for the next few weeks. It seems as though there has been a calm before the storm. all will change in two weeks (or less, depending on when it hits you)!!! some of us think 'no biggy, i've been putting in 6hr days already!(whether it's a tiring job or painful daily doubles-side note to the jocks- two words...icy hot)'. the rest are chillaxing by the pool, savoring every moment of nothingness until BANG! school starts. all this to say, who is truly ready for summer to be over and school to start? just think: college apps, SATs (possibly), and (oh no, the overused, repulsive word of senior year) poesis! are you ready now?
